Dhaka Warnings and Dangers
Beware of beggars in Dhaka. They are everywhere no matter where you go. Although they have absolutely nothing, if you give to one, prepare to be surrounded. Your best bet is to avoid giving to any beggar.
Avoid the Monsoon
Avoid the monsoon season at all cost. The rain in Dhaka during the monsoon season is anything but a drizzle. The torrential downpours cause frequent brown outs and flooded roads. While Dhaka may be a lovely place outside of monsoon season, it is a well of misery that is full to overflowing during monsoon season.
When you arrive in Dhaka and head to change your money for Bangladesh Taka, be sure to get a receipt. You cannot exchange your money for “transportable” currency without a receipt, and you will be hard pressed to find a bank outside of Bangladesh that change Taka!
Traffic, traffic and more traffic
When in Dhaka, allow plenty of time for local traffic conditions. The unproductive traffic conditions can cause issues if you need to stay on schedule or get to a meeting on time. If possible, ask to meet at your hotel unless you are anxious for a glimpse of the interesting cultural vista during your travels.
Are you going to travel on?
If you are planning to travel on from Bangladesh and plan to go on foot, it’s important to note that you must obtain a “Road Permit”. This is issued by the Passport and Immigration office in Dhaka, and don’t be surprised if it takes multiple visits over the course of several days to obtain it.
You can obtain a visa upon….
You can obtain a visa upon arrival at Dhaka Int’l Airport, but it can be rather expensive. The fee varies from country to country with Hungarians paying one of the highest fees, cca USD80(!). Use common sense and keep your valuables out of sight. In addition, be sure to boil any water before drinking.
