Tips on Ethiopia Warnings and Dangers – Stay Safe!

Ethiopia Warnings and Dangers

Every country has its upside and downside, and Ethiopia is no different. The first rule of thumb to remember when visiting a foreign land is to never get too comfortable with your surroundings.

Beware of Bad Wiring in Hotels

The hotels in Ethiopia are old and outdated, and the wiring is the same. People tend to rig up wires to avoid paying an electrician, but this also puts other people’s lives at risk. The possibility of waking up to smoke, or worse, a burning room is not far-fetched, so make note of the layout of your hotel in case of an emergency. In January 2015, the Hotel Taitu, the first hotel in Ethiopia, was destroyed due to fire.

HIV and AIDS Threat

Unfortunately, AIDS and HIV is common in Ethiopia. Millions of people die from the infection each year, and millions more are infected at the same rate. Practice safe sex, avoid needles, and check the CDC’s website for more information about the HIV/AIDS threat in Ethiopia.

General Warnings

Local Ethiopian parents are not pleased with tourists giving handouts to their children. Children are oftentimes spanked for asking or accepting gifts from tourists. Giving a donation to teachers, schools and parents is appropriate, and might be more acceptable and appreciated.

It’s possible that lone girls may approach you in your room, asking for a ride. However, their intention is to drug and rob you. The safest way to protect your credit cards and money is to leave it with friends or give it to the receptionist.

If you’re traveling with expensive camera or electronic equipment, keep it covered. The dust is dangerous and could damage your cameras and other electronics.
