Hawaii (State of) Warnings and Dangers
Hawaii is a place of breathtaking beaches and high mountain peaks. It’s also a place that occasionally requires a bit of caution.
Even lovely Hawaii has dangerous tides, stinging jellyfish, and super hot lava rocks.
Water Hazards
Many people come here and head right for the beaches. They’re lovely but you want to first read any signs you see. Sometimes, there are warnings indicating rip tides or rough currents. If you don’t know what a sign means, ask. Huge waves can look inviting but they can be very dangerous. If you have never gone surfing before, this is a great place to learn skills before you head out in the waves. Rip currents may bring you away from the beach. Don’t fight the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until the current dissipates and you can head to shore again. Tides can be particularly strong during the winter months and along the northern parts of the island. If you a sea red flag up, stay out of the water.
Jellyfish and Sharks
More common after a full moon, jellyfish can really hurt you with their stingers. The box jellyfish are particularly dangerous, with long trailing tentacles. Look for warning signs on the beach. If you think you’ve been stung, get treatment immediately. Sharks are another potentially dangerous creature. They are not uncommon even in the shallower beaches. Keep an eye out at all times. Again, get immediate attention even for a small bite.
Endangered Animals
Hawaii is also home to many creatures that will not harm you but you can harm. For example, the gentle Nene is a Hawaiian goose and a symbol of the state. If you see a sign indicating they might be crossing, pay attention to the road and try not to hit one. Another endangered creature are the sea turtles. Do not disturb them in any way. Monk seals can show up on shore to rest. They can be vicious. Heed signs indicating that you should not go near them.
Lava Rocks
Cooled lava rocks are in many places along the islands. Be careful when touching them as they can be sharp and will absorb the heat.
