Hikkaduwa Warnings and Dangers
Do your travel plans include Sri Lanka? Don’t head to Hikkaduwa without reading these warnings and dangers of traveling to this beautiful area.
While this is a relatively safe area, there are many travelers and locals who beg you to heed warning about the beach boys in the area. They go by many names, “Beach Boys”, “Rasta Boys”, “Mambo Boys” and more. The one thing they all have in common is scamming you left and right (and right out of your money). Many locals simply refer to them as “gangsters” and well-traveled tourists know to not even bother giving them the time of day.
They are not only territorial about the beaches but also about the women who travel to the area as well. Whether it is buying them drinks or talking about their woes, they will try to find a way to scam you.
While traveling in Hikkaduwa, be aware of homeless asking for money. Many people beg for money, claiming tsunamis or floods have hit their home when this is simply not the case. If that doesn’t work, they will play on your emotions by telling you stories of their mother or children who need operations and they simply cannot afford it. You may be roped into helping them by being invited to their humble homes, observing their sick children, and handing over plenty of cash just to learn that their kids were never actually sick to begin with. This is a common scam in the area and one to be aware of.
If you are trying to buy something while in Hikkaduwa, make sure you price compare first. Many tourists have found that they paid much more for an item that they could get at a fraction of the cost. The best advice, in general, is to not to respond.
