Isla de Fuerteventura Warnings and Dangers
Fuerteventura is a relatively safe island, but as with all major tourist destinations, there are always reports of crimes against unsuspecting tourists. Stay safe with these tips from fellow travelers.
Theft
Petty crime such as pickpocketing and bag snatching can occur in busy areas. Always be on your guard and keep an eye on your belongings. Never carry all of your valuables with you and don’t flash money around in public – this is an invitation to thieves.
Ocean Safety
Although the sea looks beautiful and inviting it can also be a hidden danger zone. As always you must take care near the ocean.
Keep an eye on the beach flags, they are there to protect you from dangerous seas. The beaches around most resorts are usually pretty calm, but just outside of town the water gets rougher and the flags pop up where there are riptides and bad undercurrents.
Rips and currents can be very strong, and large waves can appear from out the blue. If you swim out any far distance, keep looking back to the beach and focus on a certain point – like a building, rock, certain scenery or people – and make sure that the focus point is always in view and that you are not drifting too far left or right. If you get caught in a riptide, don’t panic and don’t try to swim back to the beach against it. You’ll quickly tire yourself out. You can either swim parallel to the current until you are out of the rip and then head back to shore.
