London Warnings and Dangers
London is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in the world, as well as the capital of the United Kingdom. Take care when traveling through London or visiting parks and museums, especially if you find yourself in large crowds.
Hiring a Car
London is a sprawling place but twice about hiring a car. Public transport is plentiful and the streets are often clogged with cars. If you’re looking for a taxi, stick to the one with a license. There are classic black cabs that have drivers who must pass a rigorous exam before they are allowed on the road. You will see unlicensed cabs known as minicabs. While less expensive, you have no recourse if something goes wrong. You can get overcharged or possibly even face physical dangers. Be mindful when walking across the streets as the Londoners driver on the left not the right.
Taking Public Transport
You’ll find many subway lines and buses. Buy a card called an Oyster card that will let you get around the city cheaply. Keep in mind that if you are planning to change methods of transport such as from a subway to a bus, you must present the card to a reader or you will be charged for two separate journeys rather than a single trip. Check the card’s website in advance to determine how much time you have left. Stand behind the line on the platform when the train is arriving to stay safe. Also keep in mind there’s a gap between the platform and the car when it comes to a curved stop.
Pickpockets can occur on crowded trains, so as in any city, be aware of your surroundings.
Street Food
London is home to a huge variety of street food and vendors. Look for a license on the vendor’s cart before you try it or you might be risking your health.
Don’t Urinate in Public
There’s a huge fine if you’re caught. For convenience, public bathrooms are everywhere, including most tube stops.
Seating in Public
Many public parks have comfortable public benches. However, if you see deck chairs in a park, keep in mind you will charged a seating fee. If you see a pinecone on a chair in a public museum, don’t sit on it.
