Malaysia Warnings and Dangers
Malaysia’s tropical climate appeals to travelers from all over the world, but like any tourist destination, there are warnings to heed and dangers to avoid.
Taxi Driver Scams
A common taxi scam in Malaysia is to keep the meter turned off, giving the taxi drivers free rein to charge whatever they want. The best solutions are to either make sure the meter is turned on or agree on a fare before you depart. Uber is another alternative to consider in lieu of taking taxis.
Be Careful around the Monkeys
The monkeys in Batu Cave are a prime tourist attraction. Some people like to feed them, but this is risky because they can become aggressive. Also, it’s a good idea to hold on tightly to anything hanging loosely on you such as sunglasses, camera, food, etc., as the monkeys take great pleasure in acquiring these treasures. The best strategy is to enjoy the monkeys from a distance.
Pickpockets and Muggers
Malaysia is generally a safe country, but like most destinations there is some petty crime to be aware of. To avoid being mugged or otherwise relived of your valuables, follow this advice:
- Only use ATMs inside a bank, not those on the street or public area.
- Be aware of what and who is around at all times.
- Do not play with your phone or other device while standing in a public place.
- Watch alcohol intake if you are going to be walking in public places.
- Always hold onto your belongings.
