Melaka is a state in Malasia that sits upon the Malay Peninsula and is divided by the Malacca River. Though an attractive place to visit, remember to be aware of warnings and dangers in order to stay safe.

Road Hazards

Many of the street in the historic old town, particularly around the Jonker Walk and the side alleys beside it, have narrow roads and irregular pedestrian walkways. Some areas even have no pedestrian walkways or paths, since the streets are narrow, so be careful when crossing through intersections.  Be doubly careful since there are few stoplights in this part of the historic old town. You’ll want to keep an eye out for cars and tourist buses that drive through the area.

You’ll also want to be safe when driving. Melaka does have traffic lights, but some come with timer displays and others do not. Others give a blinking indication they’re going to turn red while others simply change lights.  You’ll want to drive carefully, since it’s not uncommon for people to misjudge the lights and get into accidents.

No Smoking Allowed

Since 2011, the areas around Melaka that have been declared no smoking zones carry harsh penalties for violators. If you’re found smoking, you could end up not only paying a fine, but also serving time in jail. Take precautionsl because there are few signs letting you know if you’re in a non-smoking zone. If you don’t see a sign, don’t assume that you can smoke.
