Mongolia Warnings and Dangers
One of the largest landlocked countries in the world, Mongolia is a wonderfully unusual destination with a few problems you will need to remember. When here, be careful of diseases and problems such as sandstorms.
The Plague
Yes, that plague. It’s all over Mongolia. Transmitted by fleas on rodents, it can be cured by swift use of antibiotics. If you see warnings signs, stay away. The plague is dangerous and sometimes deadly.
Get Vaccinated
Typhoid, hepatitis a and hepatitis b are also rampant. Get up to date on your shots before you leave so you don’t come with a truly unwanted souvenir.
The Weather
The weather can get very cold. Temperatures can drop rapidly as early as September. Bring warm clothing all year long as even summer nights can get surprisingly cold. When traveling, be aware that dust storms can suddenly spring up. If you do find yourself caught in one, pull off to the side of the road if you can and take cover. Be aware if you are driving, storms can vastly decrease your visibility.
Mongolian Culture
The traditional Mongolian house is known as a ger. It’s a felted tent with an interior support. Do not lean on the support when inside the tent or it may collapse. Vodka is the preferred form of alcoholic drink. Horses are still a major form of transport in many places. You should be careful when riding one as they will only respond to commands in Mongolia not English. Bring a flashlight with you when it starts to get dark. The power is not reliable even in the capital.
