Tips on Phnom Penh Warnings and Dangers – Stay Safe!

Phnom Penh Warnings and Dangers

During the last couple of years, safety in Cambodia has improved a lot. Violence against tourists is pretty rare, however, if you are in a crowded nightclub or bar, be alert.

Motorbikes are available for rent, however Phnom Penh traffic is chaotic and dangerous even by Asian standards. Motorbike-taxis – motos – are everywhere and will take you anywhere for a small fare. A trip from Sisowath Quay to Central Market costs about 2,000 riel. Fares are higher at night, so you need to agree on a price before you leave.

As a huge number of scarred or maimed locals can attest, motorbikes – either as rider or passenger – are an extremely risky form of transport. On a motorbike, you are exposed to the worst consequences of the city’s dreadful pot holes, bad drivers and appalling accident rate.

The main problem in rural area is still the landmines, especially near the border of Thailand. Be careful if you venture out in the countryside by yourself. Stay on marked roads and trails. Landmines are still a very big concern in Cambodia, as you can see by the many amputees, young and old alike, in the country.

After dark, robbery at gunpoint seems to be quite common. There are several reports of tourists being dragged from their motorbikes. Make sure that you don’t stay out in the evening, or if you do, don’t do it alone and stay alert.

Hot Tip: Due to extreme heat and humidity here in Cambodia it is necessary to always carry plenty of fresh drinking water as it is surprising just how much your body loses in the heat of the day.
