Ricketts Glen State Park Warnings and Dangers
Ricketts Glen State Park is a wonderful place to experience the great outdoors. Before you go, there are a few things you should be aware of so you can take precautions and avoid any trouble.
Hike With Caution
The Ricketts Glen Trail is a difficult one. Before you go on the hike you’ll see a big board with newspaper clippings of people who have been hurt; some have died. Be careful! Also, don’t try to go into the falls, the rocks in the water are about impossible to stand on. Additionally, after it rains, it gets very slippery; definitely wear good supportive shoes. Check the website for trail closures and/or maintenance before you go.
Swim in Designated Areas
Obey the signs you see regarding swimming and only hop in the water in officially designated areas (i.e. the beach). In recent years they’ve been cracking down on illegal swimming on the trail. If you’re caught swimming illegally, the fines are pretty steep.
Beware of Bugs and Snakes
In this park you’ll want to use insect repellant, especially in the spring. You’ll be on the trail long enough to want something to eat, so bring a snack you can eat as you walk. You don’t want to remain in one place for more than a minute or so or because there will be enough mayflies and gnats swarming around you to drive you crazy. If you want to avoid the buggers, visit later in the summer or in the fall. Or, you could wear a beekeeper hat with netting.
There are also snakes in the park, many aren’t poisonous, but you don’t want to tangle with one by getting too close or stepping on one. You might also encounter other wild animals too, so be mindful of your surroundings while on the trail.
