Saint Petersburg Warnings and Dangers
Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia. Although it is an exciting city with a rich European history, there are some things tourists should be wary of.
Crowds Encourage Street Crime
When you are visiting Saint Petersburg, be especially vigilant when you are in crowds. Around the metro station, Church on Spilled Blood, and other crowded spots, there seems to be a number of pickpocketing street criminals. Keep your wallet, camera, or handbag close, and leave your valuables at home. You may not even realize you’re being pickpocketed until it happens.
Another source of street crime is large groups, possibly of homeless individuals, who sometimes surround tourists to ask for money and pickpocket unsuspecting tourists. If a group starts to surround you in Saint Petersburg, don’t let them get too close: back away immediately. The police have tried to prevent these thieves from stealing from tourists and other vulnerable individuals, so notify authorities if this happens to you.
Be Aware of Taxi Charges
Some taxi drivers will overcharge you if you are not paying close attention to the meter. A short ride could cost you four or five times than you expected. Negotiate a solid price before you get into the cab. If your Russian is not very good, ask a local to help you navigate this task.
Local Nightclub Cautions
Going to a nightclub is a great idea, but be careful which clubs you visit in Saint Petersburg. Some clubs prey on out-of-towners to steal credit card information. To prevent this from happening watch the bartender or waitress carefully when handing over your card. Another option is to bring only cash.
Don’t Step on the Grass
It may seem unusual to outsiders, but you are not allowed to step on the grass in Saint Petersburg parks especially the park next to the Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Uniformed officers could approach you even if you are just there to take photos, and you may have to pay a large fine.
