The Airport 

The tiny airport has one of the world’s shortest runways. Many people to gather to see planes taking off literally a few feet above their heads. However, be aware that getting too close can pose a huge problem. Jet fumes can easily make you sick. Strong winds from the back of a plane can pick you up and hurl you to the ground violently. Keep your kids away from the fences surrounding the airport or they could get seriously hurt.

Storms are Common

The placid sea may feel inviting but keep in mind storms are a commonplace experience. Check the local weather forecast before heading out. If you see a sudden storm, get out of the water as fast as possible. Strong waves in the aftermath pose a dangerous health hazard.

Sea Urchins and Jet Skis 

Huge sea urchins are commonly found in the waters of Sint Maarten. They are tasty but dangerous. Watch your step. They have sharp spikes that can lodge in your feet. You can spot them as dark blobs against the beige rocks.

Another hazard swimmers face are jet skis. Jet skis are available for rent all over the island. They make a great way to get out on the local waters. However, some riders are careless. The skis are not allowed within a certain number of feet of the swimming areas. Unfortunately, some careless riders ignore these rules and choose to go here. Stay away if you see them in the water.

Another, far less dangerous hazard are nude beaches. Be aware that some places in Sint Maarten allow nude bathing. If that’s not your thing, you might want to stay away.

Fake Buses and Driving Here 

Some locals operate buses that are not licensed. While you can take one, keep in mind it’s probably better to stick with authorized buses. Look for buses with the destination in the window to find an official ride.

Driving can be dangerous. Many large intersections lack lights, so be careful when crossing so you don’t get hit. Keep your car locked at all times if you rent a car as some areas may not be safe. Many people recommend avoiding the capital city as it has areas that can be dangerous, particularly at night. The resorts are safer and often have private security to protect your belongings.
