Sintra Warnings and Dangers
Considered part of the Portuguese Riviera, Sintra features the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, historical exploration and local cuisine. However, avoid these dangers and warnings while in Sintra.
Steep City – Skip the high heels
Sintra streets are steep and narrow, making navigation, especially when walking, difficult at times. In fact, because attractions are spread out in the mountain, public or private car is necessary.
So wear comfortable shoes and skip the high heels.
Parking difficulties and tips
Park in the new Sintra area and then walk to the historic town center area. The reason is that parking is limited in the old Sintra area.
If you do not park properly, expect to have a ticket for not parking in the right spot when you return.
Some people complain about expensive admission fees to Sintra attractions so make sure you bring along more cash than you think you will need.
Sintra is a nice place to visit, but certainly charges touristy fees at most attractions, including Moorish Castle, Pena Palace and Sintra National Palace.
Locals know about expensive fees, so also be careful of petty-level pickpockets.
Weather can be unpredictable
While some of Sintra is situated at the base of the mountain, the further up you go the more unpredictable the weather becomes. Make sure to bring along a light jacket, even on seemingly warm days if you plan to venture to attractions beyond the base.
In addition, you likely face the risk of fog. For example, Pena Palace is so far up that the weather may be different than in Old Quarter and you should definitely prepare yourself for the fog when going to Pena Palace or nearby attractions.
