Sirmione Warnings and Dangers
Home to the Grottoes of Catullus, 13th century Scaliger Castle and late 15th century Santa Maria Maggiore church, you will find ample historic sites to visit in Sirmione. However, stay informed about warnings and dangers in the area.
Leave Your Hotel Room Windows Closed to Prevent Bug Attacks
Leaving your windows closed is almost a necessity if the lights are turned on in your hotel room. The light attracts all sorts of flying bugs that include dreaded mosquitoes. If you plan to pay extra money for a room with a view of the lake, take note that you will not enjoy breaths of fresh air unless you love the thought of getting bit by insects. By the way, the gardens and pools seem to attract little flies and mosquitoes during the day. Use insect repellent as an extra safety precaution.
Beware of Walking on Cobbled Streets
Sirmione is a haven for elderly tourists who want to experience the possible health benefits associated with thermal waters. However, the ancient cobbled streets are not perfect for walking. If you are unsteady on your feet, or if you wear high heels, walk carefully to prevent a fall.
Warning: Thermal Swimming Pools are Intensely Hot
Thermal pools containing sulfur water must reach a temperature between 32 and 34 degrees. In other words, thermal pools are dangerously hot. If you must venture into one of these pools, do not stay in the heated water for a long period. Remember that a thermal pool is not a swimming pool. Also, you will probably not have the ability to stand the rotten egg smell associated with sulfur.
