Taipei Warnings or Dangers
Busy, compact Taipei is the capital of Taiwan and an exciting travel destination. When visiting this island, pay close attention to the climate and the local water. Keep in mind that this tropical island is has issues that include contagious diseases, disregard of local traffic laws and an unsafe water supply.
Typhoons
Typhoons are the Pacific version of hurricanes. Just like hurricanes, these storms attack the mainland bringing with them rain and fierce winds. Keep a close eye on the weather at all times when you are here. In any year, six to eight typhoons will make landfall. Many of them are not dangerous but may still impact your ability to travel and even your access to clean water.
The Climate
Taipei has a tropical climate. It rains nearly every single day. It’s also very hot and humid. Bring a good umbrella with you every time you go outside. Wear light clothing to help combat the humidity. Bring water with you everywhere you go in order to avoid getting dehydrated.
Health Problems
Before you leave, consider getting certain vaccinations. Hepatitis A and B are a huge problem. Both viruses can be warded off with proper advance vaccination. Other health issues that are a problem include dangerous dysentery and typhoid. Many health issues are transmitted from lack of hand washing and poor water supply. Always wash any produce before before you eat it.
Stick to bottled water. If you are unsure about the water quality anywhere, make sure the water is boiled before drinking it. Be particularly wary about eating food from street vendors. Also be careful when eating dairy products or drinking milk as such items are not required to be pasteurized.
The Local Streets
When getting around, keep in mind that many people use private scooters and motorcycles rather than buses and cars. The bikes are everywhere even the back alleys. Always look carefully before you cross any street. Many scooters carry several people at at the same time, so they may be overloaded with people and not safe. Some people will even bring their scooters and motorcycles on the sidewalks. Pay close attention to your surroundings at all times so you don’t get hurt.
