Tanzania Warnings and Dangers
Visiting Tanzania is a bucket-list experience for many people. But as with any tourist destination, there are some warnings and dangers to be aware of before you go. Here’s how to stay safe in Tanzania.
Be Careful Which Safaris You Choose
Be very careful which safari companies you use and check their reviews before booking. Some safari outfitters have been cited for not providing proper equipment for tourists, employing guides who are little more than drivers, and using public buses for transporting tourists.
Frostbite and Altitude Sickness on Kilimanjaro
You don’t normally think of frostbite in Africa, but on Kilimanjaro it can be a real concern. Kilimanjaro is 19,341 feet in elevation, which means it can become very cold at the top. If you aren’t wearing appropriate winter gear, you can get frostbite very quickly.
Altitude sickness is another issue on Africa’s highest peak. High altitude sickness can turn deadly, so unless you properly acclimatize yourself to the elevation, you can risk something as serious as cerebral edema and pulmonary edema.
Malaria and Yellow Fever
One of the most important Tanzania warnings and dangers is about the risk of contracting diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. You should get your yellow fever vaccination before entering Tanzania. You may wish to contact your doctor weeks before the trip to ensure you have the right medication to help prevent malaria. Bring mosquito spray with DEET and use it.
If you carry your belongings in a backpack, you may be a victim of a pickpocket. Thieves will slip behind you while you walk and open your backpack. If you must go through a crowd, be sure to have your backpack secured so nobody can take something from you.
