Trinidad and Tobago is an island nation in the Caribbean consisting of two very different islands, the cosmopolitan Trinidad and the beachy Tobago. The crime rate is high, especially on Trinidad, and you need to practice caution while visiting. Of the two, Tobago is the more touristy destination and feels more like a typical Caribbean island.

Personal safety

There is a wide gap between the rich and poor in Trinidad and Tobago, and theft is common on the island of Trinidad. Many hotels are walled off and gated shut at night in the capital city of Port of Spain. It is never a good idea to be alone outside at night on Trinidad. Old Stonehaven Road is notoriously dangerous at night.

Tobago is more traditionally touristy and has many beach resorts that are generally considered safe, but caution is still recommended, especially after dark.  Many people in Trinidad and Tobago are friendly and will warn you of bad areas and various dangers. Listen to them.

Ganja, a.k.a. Marijuana

Ganja, or marijuana, is readily available in Trinidad and Tobago, and use of it is common even in public areas. However, it is still illegal, and non-residents are likely to have more trouble with the authorities than would locals if caught smoking it.

Nature in Trinidad and Tobago

Much of Trinidad and Tobago is covered in rainforest, which is home to many dangerous animals including the venomous and highly deadly  fer-de-lance snake. Rainforest crabs and various insects also pose a danger. Only venture into the rainforest with a certified naturalist guide.
