Zurich Warnings and Dangers
Zurich is a beautiful city to visit, but it’s always a good idea to be aware of the warnings and dangers before you arrive. Get ready for a trip to Zurich by learning what to look for in order to avoid any dangerous situations.
Be Careful When Driving
Many streets in Zurich employ red light cameras and hard-to-spot speed cameras, and the fines for running a red light or speeding can be steep. Be sure to remain aware of changing lights and be prepared to stop at yellow lights (don’t risk trying to “beat” the red light). The margin for speeding in Zurich is only an extra 3 km/h. A good rule of thumb is to let the locals (cars with license plate numbers beginning with “ZH”) take the lead; they know where the speed traps are. If you do receive a traffic ticket, make sure you verify it is correct before you pay the fine.
Rush hour (7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) can be stressful in Zurich, especially at the Main Station and Bahnhofstrasse. Try to avoid these areas during the busy times.
Watch Out for Pickpockets
In bustling areas like Main Station and Langstrasse, you may encounter pickpockets and other people attempting to take advantage of the crowds in order to steal your things. Guard your purse and your wallet and avoid having anything of value in sight.
Stay clear of kiosks where you can be trapped or isolated. As with many larger cities, you may also encounter beggars. Beggars in Zurich are not usually looking to steal from you or act violently, but it is best if you avoid them.
