Travel tips for the Fourth of July

While the summer travel season unofficially kicks off around Memorial Day every year, it’s not until the Fourth of July that most travelers usually feel the crunch of crowded airports and long lines. We already know this summer is set to be one of the worst for travelers, and that flight delays are significantly on the rise. What you do to speed up your experience at the airport can make a difference, though.

Last November our airfare beat editor Jessica Labrencis gave her suggestions for navigating the airport rat race. As we head into this busy holiday travel week, now’s a good time for a quick refresher course.

  • Check in online whenever possible. It’s a great time-saving opportunity and eliminates the need to wait in lengthy airport check-in lines.
  • Know your airline’s weight and size restrictions for carry-ons and checked bags. Overweight or oversized bags may cost extra, and force you to check your carry-on bags.
  • Don’t leave airport parking to chance. If you plan to drive to the airport, don’t waste time searching for a spot. Reserve one before you get there and you’ll remove one big hassle before you even set foot in the terminal.
  • Arrive early. Who wants to race through the airport or risk getting stuck in line while your plane taxis for takeoff?

One thing to remember as you’re dealing with the hassle of summer travel: We’re all in it together. In fact, I’ll be right there with you (quite literally, actually, if you’re flying out of Boston’s Logan airport). Don’t be the one to cut me in line for my Starbucks and we’ll get along just fine.

Good luck and safe travels!
