Before the year is over, new air travel rules established by the Department of Homeland Security will place travelers flying to the U.S. under greater scrutiny, according to a USA Today report.
The new rule, announced yesterday, will require all U.S.-bound international flights to provide a passenger list to U.S. authorities before takeoff. The aim is to give authorities more time to compare the lists to the FBI’s “comprehensive terrorist watch lists.”
Currently, names are checked while flights are already en route to the U.S., which occasionally forces planes to be diverted mid-flight if a suspicious person appears to be on the flight. It’s hoped that the new procedure will allow authorities enough time to check names before the flight departs.
