Trieste Things to Do
Trieste is a tourist destination with rich history. No visitor should visit the city without taking a look at these intriguing locations.
Piazza St. Antonio
The huge church of St. Antonio Thaumaturgo is situated at the northern end of the Canale Grande. Its neo-classical facade and cupola represent one of the emblems of the town. You can’t miss it when you are strolling around Trieste. This amazing church and water fountain were designed by Pietro Noble. A number of many important city palaces can be seen in this area, including Palazzo Carciotti, Palazzo Gopcevich, and Museo Civico.
Piazza Unità d’Italia
The City Hall, also known as Palazoo del Municipio, is the dominating building on Trieste’s main square, Piazza Unita d’Italia. Like the square, the City Hall was designed by Italian architect Giuseppe Bruni. He completed the building in an eclectic style in 1875. The main feature of this area is the clock tower with its two bronze statues called Michez and Jachez.
Miramare Castle
The interior of the Miramare Castle contains numerous works of art and clearly reflects the taste and habits of the Vienna Court. Great care has been taken on improving the castle. It was built between 1856 and 1860 by architect Carl Junker as a residence for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife. The Miramare Sea Park, created in 1973, includes a vast arrangement of sea organisms living in the Adriatic Sea.
Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Spyridon
The Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Spyridon was build by Italian architect Carlo Maciacchini in a Neo-Byzantine style. The church offers five cupolas and is situated right in the heart of Trieste’s city center. The church was built on the site of a previous church.
Roman Amphitheater
One of the more interesting sights in Trieste is the old Roman amphitheater that sits like a time capsule in the center of the city. It was built during Trajan’s reign around the year 100 A.D. It became buried under buildings over time and was rediscovered in the late 1930s.
