Things to do in Trincomalee
Known for its historical and cultural sites and friendly, beautiful people, Trincomalee is one of the finest natural water harbors in the world. Here is a list of things to do in Trincomalee for tourists to enjoy.
Fort Frederick
This local fortress was initially built in 1623 by the Portuguese. Several years later it was rebuilt by Dutch settlers before being recolonized by the British in 1728. Evidence of British occupation includes the royal insignias that grace the massive walls of the fort. Fort Frederick is currently occupied by the Sri Lanka military. However, it is a great tourist destination that provides stunning views of other colonial buildings, historic temples, and the local wildlife.
World War II Cemetery
Located just north of Trinco town is what is arguably known as the largest British cemetery in Sri Lanka, the World War II cemetery. Despite a Japanese air raid on Trinco back in 1942 and its age, the cemetery is in pristine condition, making it a great place to see many historical WWII documents and artifacts.
Marine Life Watching
The Trincomalee Harbor is a great place for tourists to see many of the local marine life, especially the legendary blue and sperm whales and dolphins. The best time of year for whale watching is during the months of February, March, and April. It is not uncommon for tourists to see them during other seasons. To get a great view, tourists should prepare to get up early so they can catch the beautiful sunrise.
The Bays
The Bays consist of the Back Bay, Dutch Bay, and Inner Harbour. All three of the bays are great fishing and sailing spots. The Back Bay is located just to the north of Fort Frederick and has some beautiful beaches. The Dutch Bay offers stunning sunset views and amazing beaches for tourists to enjoy. It is also a great place to meet many of the local natives.
The Sacred Tree
Directly on the other side of the sacred tree is a sheer cliff drop that provides some interesting views of the marine life below. This is also a religious site where local worshippers come to pray and make offerings. The locals attach small pieces of cloth that represent their prayers to the tree’s branches.
Koneswaram Kovil
The Koneswaram Kovil is a rebuilt, clifftop Hindu temple that is dedicated to Siva. It’s located above Fort Frederick on Swami Rock, at the edge of the Indian Ocean. Tourists who are looking for a place that has stunning views of Trinco can get all of that here and more. The temple is beautifully designed with intricate details, carved figurines, and colors that make it a splendid sight to see and experience.
