Our Trip to Acadia National Park

This was our second trip to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. We had gone about 5 years ago when our son was 11 years old. He is now 16 and brought a friend along again for some company.

We spend about 5 days in and around the park and found there was never a shortage of activities, even with inclement weather.

We especially loved kayaking on Frenchman’s Bay. The water was pretty calm for first timers, ages 52-16. We had a great guide who went at the right speed for everyone, even pointing out fun facts along the way. We took the 2.5 hour trip.

We all just loved the horse drawn carriage ride that took us through Rockefellers’ bridges and along the beautiful carriage roads in Acadia. The guides stopped along the way so that we could take pictures and cross beautiful streams. There are a variety of tours available in length and in price.

We also loved hiking the trail around Jordan Pond, about 3 miles long. There is a shorter nature trail that’s about 1 mile. Beautiful scenery and some adventurous hiking, but not steep cliffs or difficult trails. It’s about an hour and a quater around the pond. Then you can stop at the restaurant for some popovers. The restuarant is expensive, so look before you enter.

Take the park loop, by car or Island Explorer (free) to see the Maine coast and Thunder Hole. It’s a 22 mile loop that’s worth the drive. Plenty of places to stop for pictures, potty or a picnic.

Lots of restaurants with a range of prices for dining out, including the Morning Glory Bakery in the town of Bar Harbor. Great breakfast, good prices. You can try the suppermarket too.

We always stay at the Wonderview Inn. Excellent prices, great location and the Island Explorer will take you downtown at no charge. We got a 2 room suite with a fridge, microwave and 2 bathrooms for $138 a night. That’s a bargain.

All in all a great take for famalies who love the outdoors and unspoiled Maine air!
