Are TSA agents now just making up rules for their own entertainment? TODAY.com reports that a passenger flying from Kauai to Maui was told by a TSA screener that she could not board her flight with empty bottles in her breast pump.
There’s so many things wrong with this statement—not the least that empty plastic bottles of any kind are permitted on planes. What exactly did the TSA officer think the passenger was going to do with the empty bottles that would cause a security risk?
Amy Strand, the mistreated passenger, was forced to go to a public restroom and use the pump out in the open (there was only one outlet, located by the sinks, to plug the pump into). Once she filled the containers, she was allowed to fly. If only the TSA screener had simply used the TSA app, which tells passengers what they can and can’t bring on the plane. The screener could have simply typed in “breast pump” and seen that yes, you can bring that aboard.
The TSA has since issued an apology, but it does raise the point that no matter what the rules are, flyers are really at the mercy of whatever random screener they get. It could have been worse, we suppose—in 2002, a screener at JFK forced a passenger to drink her own breast milk before letting her bring it aboard her flight.
