Police in London have arrested a United pilot on suspicion of being drunk. The pilot, whose name has not been released, was about to depart London for Chicago. He was removed from the plane and taken into police custody, and subsequently failed a breathalyzer test. United has already removed him from service.
In what must have been a strange scene, the 124 passengers onboard were forced to wait on the tarmac while police boarded the plane and removed the pilot. Passengers were initially told he was sick before they were finally put on alternate flights to Chicago.
For its part, United says its alcohol policy is “among the strictest in the industry and we have no tolerance for violation of this well-established policy.”
