Varanasi, India is an excellent location to purchase both locally made goods and imported souvenirs. Here are just a few of the best spots for shopping in Varanasi.
This region is known for its silk. Mehrotra Silk Factory is an excellent seller of silk, and there are at least two other stores in Varanasi that also offer it. Silk stores on Dasasvamedh sell quality products as well, but avoid silk in other locations as the quality simply can’t be matched.
Try the local chai tea while in India. When visiting Varanasi you can find someone selling it on just about any corner. Different vendors may sell slightly different variations, but it’s usually high quality. So make sure to grab at least one offering. You’ll be glad you did.
Old Varanasi Street Market
If you make your way to the old part of town, there is a hidden street market selling food and household items. This area isn’t as touristy as other destinations, so you’ll be able to purchase more authentic materials. Feel free to eat as you walk, just make sure to clean off your hands before handling anything.
Banaras Art Culture
Looking for authentic local art? Stop by the Banaras Art Culture gallery. It isn’t as expertly lit as something you might see in a European art gallery. Paintings and drawings are often stacked, so you’ll need to flip through these to see everything. Chances are you’ll find a great deal.
Varanasi is basically known for two things: silks and sweets. While you can take the silk home with you, the sweets will need to be enjoyed in town. From the sweet meats to mouth-watering treats, this is a great destination if you have a sweet tooth. Many locations provide free samples and tastings in order to give you a better idea as to what to pick up.
This area of India isn’t as touristy as other locations, which means you won’t be taken for an overpriced ride or hawked inferior goods as often. With this in mind, just wander and pop your head into different shops. You’ll be more likely to find a hidden gem that speaks directly to you.
