Winning Red Rock Resort in Vegas

Author: JillW
Date of Trip: December 2007

Family-Friendly Vegas Resort

When we last visited Las Vegas years ago, the crowds and traffic on the Strip were a little overwhelming. Today the City of Lights caters to adults more than families with children. Las Vegas Blvd. abounds with people passing out flyers for exotic dance shows, hardly appropriate for young children. Instead of staying in the middle of all the action, we took our two young girls to the new Red Rock Resort about twelve miles from the neon lights. It’s the first billion-dollar resort built off the Strip offering a more peaceful family alternative to the lights, showgirls, and discount tickets into adult clubs.

Kid Quest

The resort attracts local residents with its movie theater, arcade, and bowling alley. Guests with children are attracted to the resort’s Kid Quest child’s center. Parents register their children for an hour or two to enjoy a dinner, spa treatment, play black jack, or dance at the nightclub. First aid and CPR trained staff members entertain children from ages 6 weeks to 12-years in an indoor playground filled with colorful slides, ladders, and tunnels. Tiny Tots is a separate area for infants and toddlers with cribs for napping. Infant swings, walkers, and soft toys are available for playtime. A Quiet Play Zone is for children who enjoy arts-and-crafts, reading books, and playing with blocks or dolls. The Techno Quest Video Adventure is a popular area for non-violent GameCube, Xbox, and Nintendo fans. The Karaoke Star Stage is for budding American Idol hopefuls with its microphones and overhead TV screen. Little girls will enjoy the Sparkle Salon filled with dress up clothes and play make-up. The Cosmic Club is for tweens (8-12 years old) who enjoy Dance, Dance Revolution, Play TV Football, and Guitar Hero. Hours are from 9 a.m. to midnight and the fee is $6.40 an hour on Sunday thru Thursday and $7.40 on Friday and Saturdays. For more information call (702) 797-7646.

Backyard Pool Area

We drove to the Strip in the mornings to explore the various hotels and resorts. Instead on walking along Las Vegas Blvd. we parked at the MGM hotel and bought day passes on the Las Vegas Monorail (866-4-Monorail). It’s a clean, safe, and convenient way to see the MGM Lion Habitat, Caesars Forum shops, dancing fountains at Bellagio, and gondolier singers at the Venetian Hotel.

In the afternoon, as the buzz of the Strip became deafening, we drove back to the Red Rock Resort to relax at the pool area before preparing for dinner. This three-acre playground offers a centerpiece circular pool with an interactive fountain. Our girls enjoyed playing in the fountain and floating in the warm spa. There are comfy circular “cabeds” for guests to get a tan or take a nap. Private cabanas with lounge chairs, TVs, and wading pools are also available. During the summer months, complimentary popsicles and frozen grapes are served throughout the day to keep guests cool.

Dining Options

Eight restaurants and a food court are located in the resort. The Feast Buffet offered all the breakfast foods our daughters enjoy. The food was fresh and the variety extensive. For dinner we tried the Salt Lick BBQ and dined on ribs, brisket, beans, and homemade cobbler. The resort offers Italian, Japanese, Mexican, Steakhouse and the Grand Café, which is similar to a Cheesecake Factory.

Next time you plan a trip to Las Vegas with your family, try the Red Rock Resort. For additional information and special deals, go to or call 866-767-7773.
