World’s Dirtiest Hotels Revealed by TripAdvisor

Roaches? Check. Bed bugs, stained sheets, and moldy tubs? Check, check, and check.

SmarterTravel sister site TripAdvisor is out with its annual list of the world’s dirtiest hotels, and all of the standard dirty hotel staples listed above (and then some) are well represented. Based on traveler reviews, the list offers 10 hotels each for seven countries and regions around the globe, including the U.S., Canada, Britain, Italy, France, Europe overall, and Asia.

The dirtiest hotels list is always a fun way to tour the seedy underbelly of popular destinations—fun, that is, until you remember people actually stayed in these places, that real people took those horrific pictures. Then it turns into a sort of dark comedy. It’s hard to believe these absurdly awful places exist, and the fact that these hotels stay in business shows how easily good people get ripped off.

Speaking of the pictures—wow. In the name of journalism, I subjected myself to most of the photos from the hotels on the list, and I can honestly say I’ve seen enough water-stained ceilings, rotted doors and woodwork, filthy and/or broken toilets, moldy tiling, and bug-infested beds to last me a long time (or at least until next year’s Dirtiest Hotels list).

In the U.S., the Heritage Marina Hotel in San Francisco took the top spot, ending the Hotel Carter’s two-year reign of gross. The Grosvenor Hotel, in Blackpool, U.K., was the worst in Europe, and the Phi Phi Don Chukit Resort, in Ko Phi Phi Don, Thailand, took top honors in Asia.

To see the rest, check out the list. Then have a good chuckle, and thank your lucky stars that you haven’t stayed in any of these places (hopefully).
