You Heard It Here: Delta’s Super-Secret Award Sale

Delta is having a sale on award travel to Europe. But you wouldn’t know it from perusing Delta’s website or reading its email announcements.

The discounts went into effect yesterday, but only for elite members of Delta’s SkyMiles program. And today, the lower prices are available to all.

The discounts are significant. For example, for some dates in November and December, business-class roundtrips to London are priced as low as 87,000 miles, and coach falls to as little as 42,000 miles roundtrip.

You would expect that the airline would aggressively promote the lower award prices. After all, what’s the point of a sale if no one is aware of it? But no, not a word.

Delta has confirmed that the sale exists, but only via email, and declined to provide any further details.

What to Do Now

As always with award sales, there’s limited seat availability. In this case, Delta’s failure to publicize the sale works in favor of those who find out about it without the airline’s assistance. You, in other words, since you’re reading about the sale here.

If you have a cache of Delta miles, and are looking to use them intelligently, check out the award pricing for Europe flights this fall. The sale doesn’t affect every flight on every day to every destination. But, presumably reflecting particularly low demand on certain flights, there are significantly cheaper ward prices to be found.

If you’re flexible regarding destination and timing, this is a welcome opportunity to get solid redemption value from your Delta miles. And don’t delay: The sale could end at any time. Delta isn’t saying.
