Idaho

When To Go

Idaho's diverse geography ranges from mountain regions to plains, and climate and activities vary accordingly. The most popular time to visit is during the summer when fishing and outdoor recreational activities are at their peak. The winter is the least popular time for all visitors except skiers and snow sports enthusiasts. Fall is a good time to travel through the state, as the weather is mild and there are fewer visitors.

high season: mid-May to September, lateNovember to mid--March
shoulder season: lateMarch to mid--May, October to mid--November

Visitation peaks from December through February at ski resorts.

Weather Information

Idaho experiences four seasons throughout its many different terrains. The summers are warm and mild, with occasional afternoon rainstorms, especially in the mountains. The plains in July and August tend to be hot and dry, with temperatures averaging from 85 to 100 degrees. The winters bring snow in the higher elevations, along with cold temperatures. Spring experiences heavy winds and occasional avalanches, while fall brings temperate weather and changing leaves.

Crowd Information

Although Idaho never feels overcrowded, holidays such as President's Day in the ski areas, and Memorial Day and Independence Day in summer resort areas draw a considerable number of visitors.

Closure Information

Some restaurants in resort towns close between the peak times of winter skiing and summer. RV parks and campgrounds close for the winter.

When to Save

Prices are lower during the winter, except in ski areas.

When to Book

Book in advance to ensure the best prices and availability in resort towns. For instance, book six months in advance for travel during the summer, especially for waterfront-view accommodations, and three months in advance for travel during the winter.
